Our Mission

At Student United Way, we have a Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) - to be a driving force in making Greater Detroit a top 5 place to live and work by the year 2030. We will know that we have accomplished our goal when the children born this year are the most college and career-ready class in the nation when they graduate - 18 years from now.

But we know that we can't do this work alone and our mission reflects just that. Our mission is "to mobilize the caring power of Detroit and Southeastern Michigan to improve communities and individual lives in measurable and lasting ways." In other words, we engage people, communities, and organizations focused on meeting the needs of children and their families and creating the conditions necessary for success.

Our goals and mission are guided by core values:

  • Mission Driven: We have a passion for our mission. We believe that change is possible when we come together in a collective way. It is at the core of each person on our team.
  • All of Us: We know that there is nothing we accomplish alone. Our individual success is interdependent with our collective success.
  • Tenacious: We understand that when you work on social issues, you have to be in the work for the long haul.
  • Authentic: When we make decisions, we ask ourselves, "Is this action authentic to our mission and values?"
